Ways to Cook Chicken
How to Cook Chicken
Chickens were domesticated in Vietnam over 10,000 years ago. The scientific name for the domesticated chicken is Gallus gallus domesticus. There are now more chickens in the world than any other bird. In 2003, there were 24 billion chickens worldwide. My family raised chickens for many years. Butchering chickens was an annual event at the Hoyum homestead. Usually somewhere around 50–75 chickens were hypnotized and killed by my dad each year. We ate a lot of chicken.
Types of Chicken
In the grocery store you will find chicken whole, quartered, split, legs, thighs, wings, and breasts, either boneless or skinless. You will also be able to choose between free-range, non-genetically modified, organic, and regular chicken. These are all preferences available, but for the most part chicken tastes like chicken. The only way to get diversity is to raise some rare breed of wild chicken in your backyard. I usually buy the non-GM/free-range chicken.
Cooking Chicken
Chicken can be prepared in as many ways as you can think of. It is an extremely versatile meat and is very popular because of it. The meat of a chicken tastes rather bland and boring, thus the saying it tastes like chicken. People usually say it tastes like chicken when whatever they are eating has no remarkable flavor. I still like chicken once in a while, but, then again, I occasionally eat fast food, too.
